LauraMac Team Spotlight: Thomas Burke

Title: Associate Cloud and AI Security Engineer
Location: Missoula, Montana

About Your Career

What brought you to LauraMac?

I graduated this past spring from The University of Montana with a bachelor's degree in management information systems, and a focus on big data analytics and network security. I interned at LauraMac the summer before my senior year, then stayed on part time while I finished my degree.

When classes ended, I moved straight into a full-time role, and I have been here full time as an Associate Cloud and AI Security Engineer since the middle of May.

What is a project you're working on right now?

Most of my focus right now is on the AI security side of things. A number of our clients operate under very tight security requirements, and a lot of those requirements deal with AI. AI is exploding right now, and as more organizations look for ways to build it into their products and workflows, the need to manage it securely has become more important than ever.

Being in front of that shift is genuinely exciting, and it also introduces real risk that has to be managed deliberately. My current project is establishing security standards and best practice guidelines for AI use at LauraMac, and designing the controls and processes that support safe AI development.

General Life

What is something you're into right now?

Sports, without question. I am from Seattle originally, so the Seahawks are my team, and I am a big NFL fan in general. The season is just getting underway, which means I will be watching football for the next three or four months, and I could not be more excited about it. I am just as into playing as I am watching, and right now golf and fishing are the main things keeping me busy while my knee finishes healing.

What are some activities you like to do in your free time?

I consider myself a very active person, and that is one of the reasons I love Missoula. Pickleball, beach volleyball, any field sport, any team sport, I will go out and play it. I have always been happiest outside and moving around with friends.

I recently tore my ACL and had knee surgery, so this year has been more of a challenge than usual, but I should be cleared to ski again by the middle of this season. I am an avid skier. I love the snow, the cold, and being outdoors in nature, and skiing brings all of that together with the kind of adrenaline I tend to chase. My girlfriend and I camp and fish all the time, and fly fishing here in Montana is one of my favorite things about living where we do.
